Your retirement options
Choosing how to take your pension is one of the most important financial decisions you will make. Below is a concise guide to your primary options.
Please note: A pension is a long term investment. Fund values can fall as well as rise, and your eventual income depends on your pot size, interest rates, and tax legislation. Tax laws are complex and depend on individual circumstances.
Flexi-access drawdown
Flexi-access drawdown lets you take income as and when you need it while keeping the rest of your pot invested.
Tax free cash: You can usually take up to 25 percent of your pot as a tax free lump sum.
Flexible income: The remaining fund provides an income. Withdrawals are taxed at your standard Income Tax rate, so large withdrawals could push you into a higher tax bracket.
Key risk: Your future income depends directly on investment performance. Taking income too quickly could deplete your fund early.

Capped drawdown
Capped drawdown limits the maximum income you can withdraw each year, with limits reviewed regularly. If you are currently in capped drawdown, you can choose to remain or switch to flexi access drawdown for unlimited withdrawal options. Moving to flexi access will apply the £10,000 annual allowance limit once income starts.
Pension lump sums (UFPLS)
Uncrystallised Funds Pension Lump Sums allow you to take cash payments directly from an untouched pension without setting up a formal drawdown plan.
Tax treatment: The first 25 percent of each lump sum is tax free, while the remaining 75 percent is taxed as income.
Contribution limits: Taking a lump sum this way triggers the Money Purchase Annual Allowance, which limits future tax relieved pension savings to £10,000 a year.

Passing on your pension
You can nominate beneficiaries to receive your pension when you die, including family members, friends, or charities. Beneficiaries can take the fund as a lump sum or draw an income. Tax on death benefits:
Death before age 75: Benefits are paid tax free, provided the funds are designated within two years.
Death after age 75: Benefits are taxed at the beneficiary's marginal Income Tax rate.
Generational wealth: If your beneficiary does not use the entire pot, they can pass the remaining funds on to their chosen successors.
Guaranteed income with annuities
An annuity turns your pension pot into a guaranteed income for the rest of your life, giving you complete certainty.
If you have a medical condition, high blood pressure, or a history of smoking, you may qualify for an enhanced annuity. Because your life expectancy may be reduced, providers offer significantly higher income rates. Getting specialist advice is crucial to ensure you get the best rate available.
Is income drawdown right for you?
Income drawdown offers flexibility and potential investment growth, making it a popular alternative to an annuity. It is generally best suited to individuals with larger pension pots who are comfortable with investment risk and wish to manage how their family receives death benefits.
Because options can be complex and choices are often permanent, we strongly recommend seeking expert advice before making a decision.

Please note that whilst every effort is made to ensure that the information contained within this explanation is correct, these notes are by necessity brief and of a generalised nature. We would provide specific personalised advice prior to finalising any arrangement.
The value of your investments and any income from them can fall as well as rise and you may not get back the amount you originally invested. It is important to note that not all personal pensions allow the facility to self invest and you should check the details of your existing pension if this is a requirement. HM Revenue and Customs practice and the law relating to taxation are complex and subject to individual circumstances and changes which cannot be foreseen. For specialist tax advice, please refer to an accountant or tax specialist.
